What is the Emmett Technique?
The Emmett Technique is a gentle manual technique that involves applying light finger pressure to specific points on the body. According to the technique's founder, Ross Emmett, these points are called Emmett points.
What are Emmett points?
Emmett points are specific locations on the body where gentle pressure is applied during the technique. In babies, stimulation of Emmett points is carried out with a very light, brief and gentle touch, always adapted to their age and individual needs. The pressure needed to stimulate Emmett points does not need to be strong or painful. The goal is to encourage muscle relaxation, reduce tension and enable a better movement pattern.
What does an Emmett treatment session look like?
An Emmett treatment can be performed in different positions, but in babies it is most often carried out lying on their back. The therapy can be performed over clothing or directly on the skin, depending on the situation and the child’s needs.
How long does an Emmett treatment last?
The duration of an Emmett treatment depends on the child's age and the reason for the visit. In babies, a session usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes when performed on its own, and it can be combined with other therapeutic approaches if needed.
For which conditions is the Emmett Technique most often used?
The Emmett Technique is most often recommended to parents because of:
- a preference for turning the head to one side
- torticollis (wry neck)
- body asymmetry
- general body stiffness, especially in the neck and shoulder girdle
- infant colic
- gastric reflux
- increased or decreased muscle tone
Each treatment is adapted to the child’s individual needs, with the goal of encouraging greater relaxation, better-quality movement and improved body function.
