What is baby handling?
Baby handling is a gentle approach that involves safe and correct handling of your baby while also stimulating their motor development.
What does baby handling involve?
Baby handling covers a set of techniques for correctly lifting, carrying, putting down, changing and feeding your baby, as well as positioning them for burping. The aim of the training is to help parents feel more confident in their everyday care of the child, and to use correct handling to support and encourage healthy motor development.
When is the best time to start baby handling?
The ideal time for baby handling training is during the first three months of a baby's life, especially in the first days after birth. This is when parents often have the most questions and uncertainties about handling a newborn day to day, so the training can offer extra support, confidence and practical skills. Although it is best to start as early as possible, the training can be done at any point during the first year of the baby's life, so it is never too late to learn correct handling techniques.
What are the goals of baby handling?
With baby handling we aim to encourage symmetrical body development, the development of head and trunk control, and to give the baby a sense of security and comfort during carrying and everyday care. We also encourage the baby's active participation in movement, which supports healthy motor development. At the same time, we want to give parents greater confidence, security and ease in handling their baby every day.
