Lymphatic Drainage

What is lymphatic drainage and when can it help?

Many people have heard of lymphatic drainage but are not quite sure what it actually involves. Some associate it with massage, while others think it is used purely for cosmetic purposes. The truth, however, is a little different. Lymphatic drainage is a specific technique that stimulates the lymphatic system and can help with various conditions related to swelling and fluid retention in the body.

What does a lymphatic drainage treatment look like?

Unlike classic massage, lymphatic drainage is performed with light, slow movements. The goal is not to relax the muscles but to stimulate the flow of lymph through the lymphatic vessels. The treatment itself is generally pleasant and painless, and many people feel a sense of lightness and reduced tension in the arms or legs afterwards. The duration of the therapy depends on the reason for the visit and the patient's condition, but a single lymphatic drainage treatment usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.

For which conditions is lymphatic drainage recommended?

Lymphatic drainage is most commonly recommended for people with lymphoedema, that is, swelling caused by a disorder of the lymphatic system. It can also be useful after certain operations or injuries when swelling is present, as well as for a feeling of heavy, tired legs. It is important to stress that the therapy is always adapted to each individual. Before starting, the physiotherapist assesses the patient's condition and decides whether lymphatic drainage is the right choice.

Are there situations when lymphatic drainage is not recommended?

Although it is a safe therapy, there are situations in which lymphatic drainage is not performed. For example, in cases of acute infection, untreated deep vein thrombosis, or certain heart conditions, a doctor's opinion is required first. It is therefore advisable to talk to the physiotherapist before treatment and mention any health issues you may have.

How many lymphatic drainage treatments are needed?

There is no single answer to this question. For some, a few sessions will be enough to reduce swelling, while people with chronic conditions will need longer-term therapy. The number of treatments depends on the cause of the problem and the goal to be achieved. Lymphatic drainage is not a miracle solution for every condition, but when applied for the right indications and as part of a professional physiotherapy approach, it can be very beneficial. If you have swelling, a feeling of heaviness in the legs, or have been advised to have it after surgery, talking to a physiotherapist is the best first step to find out whether this therapy is the right choice for you.
